DOLE EV starts providing emergency employment to 740 earthquake victims in Ormoc City

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment in Region 8 has started providing emergency employment to 740 earthquake victims from the 14 barangays in Ormoc City.

DOLE Regional Director Joel M. Gonzales said that the emergency employment program that started last July 26, 2017 is an immediate intervention to the victims and their families following a magnitude 6.5 earthquake that occurred in Leyte last July 6, 2017.

The DOLE in the region has earmarked a total amount of P2,335,440.00 to pay for the wages of 740 worker-beneficiaries that have been identified by the Local Government Unit of Ormoc City from its barangays, namely: Danao, Tongonan, Liberty, Gaas, Maticaa, Nueva Vista, Cabintan, Milagro, Cabao-an, Hugpa, San Jose, Quezon Jr, Bagong, and Macabug.

“The said workers are going to work for a minimum of 10 days and they will be paid by DOLE with the minimum daily wage of P285.00”, Gonzales explained.

Director Gonzales hopes that the said emergency employment will be an immediate source of income for the victims, in order for them to buy food, medicines and other necessities.

The DOLE collaborates with the City Government of Ormoc through Mayor Richard Gomez in the implementation of the emergency employment program in order to help and assist the victims in the restoration of their houses, livelihood and other basic needs through the income derived from the said program, at the same time to reconstruct basic infrastructures and facilities in the affected areas.

Mayor Gomez for his part thanked the DOLE for being the first national government agency to offer help and assistance to his constituents through the emergency employment program.
