DOLE educates employers in cargo and stevedoring sector on how to comply with labor regulations

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment in Region 8 conducted an orientation on how employers in hardware stores, cargo forwarding, couriers and stevedoring services shall comply with labor and employment regulations, last February 5, 2018 at Patio Victoria, Tacloban City.

Around 70 employers and workers representing the said sector in the region attended the event dubbed as “Tips/Effective Techniques on How to Comply with the Law on Regularization, Occupational Safety and Health Standards, Wages and other Statutory Benefits”

DOLE Regional Director Joel M. Gonzales said that the activity aimed to educate employers in the different sectors and industries in the region on the recent labor policy issuances, and encourage them to develop a culture of voluntary compliance.

“We have rolled out this activity with establishments engaging piece rate workers and those paid by results because of the so many issues surrounding their employment, but we are also planning to bring this to other sectors and industries in the region”, Director Joel M. Gonzales said.

DOLE Undersecretary Dominador R. Say who served as the guest speaker during the one-day event explained that the best way to comply with any law or regulation is to understand and be familiar with it.

“We at the DOLE always promote industrial peace in any issue that involves management and labor, and if there is no common understanding on the interpretation of a labor policy, it is always best to seek guidance from the DOLE, instead of bringing the matter to the streets”, the Undersecretary added.

The activity was capped with an open forum where issues from both management and labor were aired out and addressed.
