May 1 Job Fairs yield 389 HOTS in Region VIII

Tacloban City – A total of three hundred eighty-nine (389) jobseekers were hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) in the two Job Fairs conducted on May 1, 2019 in Ormoc and Tacloban in celebration of the 2019 Labor Day.


With the theme “Pagpupugay sa Manggagawang Pilipino”, the 117th Labor Day celebration in Tacloban kicked-off with a Eucharistic Mass at Sto. Niño Church followed by a motorcade from the church to Tacloban Convention Center in Sagkahan. More than seventy (70) government agencies and private establishments joined the motorcade to show support in commemorating the special day for all workers.

A commemorative program was held prior to the conduct of the Job and Livelihood Fair. Present to grace the activity were Ms. Teofila Brosas, Ph.D., representing Tacloban City Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez, Atty. Miguel Tezon representing the labor sector, Atty. Ryan Mancera representing the management sector, and Director Celerina Bato from the Department of Trade and Industry.

The Guest of Honor, DOLE Assistant Secretary Mariano R. Alquiza relayed the message of DOLE Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III that highlights the contributions of the Filipino workers across the country. He said, “Our workingmen across the country and elsewhere around the world have contributed immensely to national growth, and brought honor and pride to the nation with their excellence and global competitiveness.”

Atty. Tezon and Atty. Mancera likewise shared their personal greetings for the joyous occasion.

Atty. Tezon congratulated all the workers and employers for showing support to the call of solidarity. His message centered on loving one another. He said, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself. I hope we will all be looking after one another’s welfare.”

Atty. Mancera, as an employer himself, shared how he is privileged to be of help to his employees. “Isang prebilihiyo at karangalan ang katayuan ko bilang isang negosyante dahil my oportunidad ako na mapabuti ang pamumuhay ng aking mga empleyado. Habang ako ay umaasenso, mas lalo po akong nakakatulong sa aking mga empleyado,” Atty. Mancera said.

DOLE Region VIII Director Yahya A. Centi, who was on top of all the preparations sincerely thanked everyone for sparing time to pay tribute to the workers of Eastern Visayas.

“May 1 is a holiday and most people are taking the chance to spend the day with their loved ones, but all of you spared your precious time to join this simple tribute to our hardworking men and women of Eastern Visayas. For that, we are very much thankful and motivated”, said Dir. Centi in his closing remarks.

After the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, the Job Fair was formally opened to jobseekers. Seventy-three (73) local and overseas employers participated during the fair bringing in more than nine thousand (9,000) job vacancies.  A total of one thousand one hundred forty-four (1,144) applicants registered during the one-day job fair, in which two hundred seventy (270) were hired.

Conducted simultaneously with the job fair was the livelihood fair which exhibited various products of fourteen (14) DOLE-Assisted associations from different parts of the region. Total sales generated during the event amounted to P42,608.00.

To make the celebration even more fun and rewarding, free services such as massage, haircut, manicure and pedicure were made available through the help of TESDA.

Meanwhile, a total of one thousand two hundred seventy-four (1,274) jobseekers registered in the Ormoc Job Fair with one hundred nineteen (119) HOTS. End/Norma Rae S. Costimiano
