Workers in Eastern Visayas to get wage hike soon

TACLOBAN CITY – In a press conference held on July 24, 2019 at the DOLE Training Center, the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office VIII in coordination with the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-Region VIII, announced that workers in Eastern Visayas will be getting a wage increase soon.

Director Yahya A. Centi, Chairman of RTWPB and DOLE RO VIII Regional Director, informed the different media outlets in Leyte about the good news.

“After three months of cross-sector consultations and debates, this wage board has finally come to this part which is the issuance of a new wage order. We consider this new wage order a gift to all our minimum wage earners here in Region VIII”, said Centi.

Following the public hearing conducted at Patio Victoria last July 17, the Wage Order No. RB VIII-21, prescribing the new minimum wage rates for Eastern Visayas, was approved by the RTWPB-Region VIII on July 22, 2019 and was submitted to the National Wages Productivity Commission (NWPC) for approval.

The new wage order provides for a basic wage increase of P20.00 to be given in two (2) tranches – P10.00 increase per day for the first six (6) months from effectivity and additional P10.00 increase per day starting on the 7th month from effectivity.

Once approved, the new minimum wage rates in Region VIII will be as follows: First tranche – P315 for workers in Non-Agriculture and Retail/Service employing 11 workers and above; and P285 for workers under the Cottage/Handicraft, Agriculture and Retail/Service employing 10 workers and below; Second tranche – P325 and P295, respectively. 

As of now, the board is awaiting NWPC’s approval of the said wage order so that it can proceed with the publication.

The new wage order shall take effect 15 days after its publication on a newspaper of general circulation in the region. 

It can be recalled that RTWPB conducted sectoral wage consultations in Ormoc City on April 26, 2019; Maasin City on May 10, 2019; Naval, Biliran on June 17, 2019; Catarman, Northern Samar on July 2, 2019; and Borongan City on July 5, 2019.#
