New rays of hope in mini-grocery project amid pandemic

Tacloban City – Some fifty (50) members of Kilusang Pagbabago Municipal Association in Brgy. 1 Commonwealth, Rosario, Northern Samar saw new rays of hope from the livelihood project granted by the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office No. VIII through its Northern Samar Field Office (NSFO) amounting to Php 499,000.00.

In a simple turnover ceremony held on 12 August 2020 in the said barangay, DOLE-NSFO Chief Patria A. Bigcas representing Regional Director Yahya A. Centi, personally graced the ribbon-cutting of the “Mini-Grocery Store” business of the beneficiaries who are all farmers.

Chief Bigcas congratulated all the beneficiaries for their newly-opened business and encouraged them to work unitedly for the success of their new found source of income.

“Congratulations to our KP Municipal Association on your new business. In behalf of DOLE and my Regional Director, Director Yahya A. Centi, I would like to say that there is indeed hope amidst this global pandemic we are all facing. Just be united and work as a team for the success of your mini-grocery”, said Ms. Bigcas.

Ms. Virgina Tidong, President of the association, expressed her sincere thanks to DOLE and likewise committed to take good care of their mini-grocery store.

“All of us in the association are very happy that finally we now have our own business aside farming. This may be a mini-grocery but for us it is really a big thing especially during this crisis. Thank you DOLE for giving us new hope through this livelihood assistance. We will do our best to prove that we can turn this business into something big someday”, said Ms. Tidong.

The mini-grocery is seen to bring great benefit not only to the members but for the residents of the area and nearby barangays who will no longer go to other municipalities to buy their daily basic needs.

The said livelihood project, implemented through direct administration of the DOLE-NSFO, was charged under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP) funds of the regional office.

The DILEEP is DOLE’s contribution to the government’s effort to reduce poverty and vulnerability to risks of the working poor, vulnerable and marginalized workers either through emergency employment and promotion of entrepreneurship and community enterprises.
