Worker gets peace of mind from online SENA settlement

Tacloban City – The DOLE-Southern Leyte Field Office (SLFO) had reached its first amicable settlement via the digital platform on 26 August 2020, without monetary benefits but peace of mind for a worried worker from the province of Southern Leyte.

Cognizant of the DOLE’s new mantra of creating opportunities and bringing hope to our people, one successful Single Entry Approach (SEnA) conference made it true.

Mr. X, the requesting party and an employee of a service provider, alleged that he was illegally terminated from his job and sought help from DOLE though the SEnA program. Ms. Marites Z. Vi?as, as Head of DOLE-SLFO and Single Entry Assistance Desk Officer of the said request for assistance (RFA), took the initiative to pursue the mandatory conference using the Zoom online meeting platform.

Through the online conference attended by both parties, it was known that the employee, who has been with his employer since 2018, was not termnated but rather put on a floating status due to the temporary cessation of operations by the principal on account of COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the mandatory conference, it was agreed that the requesting party shall be prioritized to be called to work again as soon as the principal resumed its operations.

Although there was no monetary consideration given during the conference as the employer had been compliant with labor standards, the requesting party stepped out of the office finding relief of mind and heart having been assured of a return to work priority. He said that he really made the right decision to seek assistance from DOLE to ease him from the worries he had been experiencing lately.

“With millions of workers now fighting unemployment because of the global health crisis, I am still blessed because it is now clear to me that I have a job to look forwar to when situation becomes better. Thanks to DOLE and its SEnA program for giving me hope and peace of mind”, said Mr. X in dialect.

The online SENA ended with two parties agreeing faithfully to their settlements. The impacts of COVID-19 is massive that is is not only affecting the workers but also the operations of all types of businesses even in the government sector. In this light, with pandemic lockdowns or not, the SLFO showed a performance by working through the new mantra of DOLE which is to create opportunities and provide hope to its valued clients.

SEnA is an administrative approach to provide a speedy, impartial, inexpensive and accessible settlement procedure for all issues/complaints arising from employer-employee relations to prevent them from ripening into full-blown disputes. End/Norma Rae S. Costimiano with reports from Lykka Labor
