First Virtual Congressional Forum conducted by DOLE-RO8

Tacloban City –  The senior officials of the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office No. 8 conducted on 7 September 2020 the first virtual congressional forum which was attended well by Representatives of the different Districts and Partylists in Eastern Visayas.

Regional Director Yahya A. Centi expressed his profound thanks to all the honorable representatives for honoring the invitation. He mentioned that with lawmakers like them, there is really “paglaum” or hope for the people of Region 8.

“I am extremely humbled for the generosity of our honorable representatives for honoring our invitation for this significant activity. With your support as lawmakers of the region, I can really say that there is paglaum for our people”, said Director Centi.

The online forum was graced by the Majority Floor Leader of the 18th Congress and Representative of 1st District of Leyte, Cong. Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez.

In his congressional message, Cong. Romualdez appreciated DOLE-RO8 under the leadership of Director Centi for initiating the forum which is very timely considering that congress is already deliberating the General Appropriations Act. 

 “I would like to thank the DOLE RO8 and Director Centi for his initiative in coming up with this virtual congressional forum which is very timely as we are already deliberating in the congress the GAA. This forum will serve as an avenue for DOLE and all District Representatives to discuss most pressing issues faced by workers in the Eastern Visayas”, said Cong. Romualdez.

Cong. Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez likewise conveyed his commitment to help curb the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the lives of the Filipino workers particularly in Region 8. He even reported accomplishments of his office relative to the programs rolled out during the pandemic such as the TUPAD. 

Highlights of the forum were the presentation of the priority programs and projects of DOLE by Mr. Edgar B. Tabuyan, Chief of the Technical Support Services Division (TSSD). 

The District Representatives likewise raised their priorities, issues and concerns during the forum and were responded to by the respective heads of the different provincial offices.

Director Warren Miclat of the DOLE-Financial Management Services, representing Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III extended his congratulations to DOLE RO8 for the successful activity. He likewise appealed to the lawmakers of the Eastern Visayas region to back-up the proposed budget of DOLE in order to assist more workers displaced by the pandemic. He likewise apprised the body that DOLE’s funds for 2020 are almost depleted.

Cong. Paul R. Daza grabbed the opportunity to manifest during the forum his request for another extension of Director Centi in the region in order to attain continuity of the excellent delivery of labor and employment programs and services

The activity ended with a closing remark from Cong. Gerardo J. Espina Jr. of the Lone District of Biliran and Lead Convenor of the virtual congressional forum. He thanked Secretary Bello and RD Centi for always ensuring that assistance is being extended to the people of Eastern Visayas.

In closing, Cong. Espina assured the DOLE Senior Officials of their commitment as lawmakers to give full support to the passage of DOLE’s budget for 2021.

“I am assuring our Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III and the entire department that we will be supporting the passage of DOLE’s budget for 2021”, Cong. Espina said.
