GIPs serve as tutors to elementary students in Biliran

Tacloban City – The Government Internship Program of the Department of Labor and Employment has paved the way for the Provincial Government of Biliran to help educate elementary students from different municipalities amidst the pandemic.

Through the initiative of Governor Rogelio “Dok Roger” J. Espina, together with the facilitative efforts of DOLE-Biliran Field Office, GIP beneficiaries, who are Education degree holders, were tasked to teach students for the continuity of education despite the suspension of face-to-face classes due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Espina said that his firm belief on the importance of education to the young generation made him think of the idea of deploying the GIPs for the said cause.

“The in-depth learning a student would receive from these tutors is a lot more efficient and effective compared to modular and online classes, of which students are having hard time due to low interconnectivity in their respective areas”, said Gov. Espina.

DOLE-RO8 Regional Director Henry John S. Jalbuena lauded the Provincial Government of Biliran for the unique initative.

“I commend the great initiative of our good Governor Espina in utilizing our interns for such a good cause. This serves as landmark of employment and education coming together in addressing pandemic-caused problems”, Jalbuena said.

Director Jalbuena likewise thanked Congressman Gerardo Espina for believing in the DOLE programs and for allocating congressional funds for the implementation of GIP in the province.

“Our job at DOLE becomes even more fulfilling knowing that local leaders trust the integrity of our programs and services. I thank Congressman Espina for allocating funds for our GIP which have assisted some 324 beneficiaries”, said Jalbuena.

Government Internship Program or GIP aims to provide opportunities and engage young workers to serve the general public in government agencies’ projects and programs at the national and local level.  End/Norma Rae S. Costimiano with reports from Khristian A. Tumabiene-DOLE BFO
